Highland Christmas Soiree
Gifts for the Christ Child - December 15 - 5:30pm. POTLUCK - This is a finger food and dessert evening. Families please bring a generous platter of finger foods and a dessert. Couples and singles please bring either a generous platter of finger foods or a dessert. (No nuts please). PERFORMANCE - The evening is open for performances from individuals and groups. If you have a gift you would like to bring (a song, poem, story, skit, etc.), please contact Joyce K. |
A L'IL BIT 'O HISTORY:
"Years ago, in Highland Community church, it was decided that rather than having a Sunday School program exclusively, during the Christmas season, we would change it to a program called the Highland Soiree, and people would share their talents, as "Gifts for the King".
It started when Roland B. was the pastor, and has remained much the same since. Potluck appetizers and desserts were served and people relaxed and visited around the tables. For years, Dee V. would mix her apple cider and serve it as people came in the door. Children would perform piano songs, or solos, the Sunday School group would produce a short play, recently with props like a lovely stable, and large iron angels built by Peter K. and a manger built by Ben W. The Youth would also have a skit or short play. Often Hal T. would recite a wonderful Christmas story from the Gifts of the Magi, or Dylan Thomas' Christmas in Wales.
Whole families would come and celebrate this special night together, as students came home from around the country from different universities or colleges. In the end, we would sing Carols to the King, including one German verse of Silent Night." ~ Joyce K.
